In keeping pace with the enjoyment of the journey, I have over the years always chosen the coastal route along the Andes. The reason been the better chance of no "bumps" in the air, the idea of the airmass crossing the Pacific with no resistance and bumping in the Andes...makes for a bumpy ride ver the mountains for sure.
This is what I had in mind:

But Santiago control offered us the following:
A direct staight line to Santiago, right above the Andes.
What a flight, not a single bump...not a single cloud and a unique view of the barest land on earth...Not the place to make an emergency landing.
